Gupta

I remember deciding to transfer to NKU after my freshmen year of college at UK and being faced with a whole world of unknowns. One of the biggest ones was where the heck was I going to live? My parents had recently moved to South Carolina and my nearest relatives lived 500 miles away. By the grace of God, I somehow ended up owning an awesome two bedroom condo but could not afford the monthly mortgage by myself. Thus, the prayers for an awesome roommate began.

The first time I met Ali was in the fall of 2010. We were doing work crew for a Young Life weekend camp in Ohio. I had never met her before but a group of 4 girls of us carpooled together. I remember she sat in the backseat with her hood up the whole time and sang Ke$ha. A day or two into the weekend, we were getting ready for bed and I started asking her if she liked this one boy that was also doing work crew for the weekend. Apparently, she was very taken aback because of the boldness and audacity of this conversation. But she soon realized that I'm a very bold person and I rarely think of the awkward consequences that could come of me bringing up socially unacceptable topics.

From the car ride up to the weekend camp

Fast forward about six months and my hunt for a roomie is in full swing. I was sitting at leadership in Northern Kentucky one Friday night and Ali happened to be sitting across the table from me. We had talked briefly since that fall weekend, but it was always in passing and very surface-y. For some reason I got the idea to ask her where she was living next semester. She had plans to move into a house with a few girls, but it fell through so she was also looking for a place to stay. And whatya know, a month later we became roomies.

So long ago!

The first few nights were a little uncomfortable. We seriously did not know each other at all. It was full of awkward coming and goings and short little conversations. About a week after we had moved in we both found our selves sitting at home on a random evening. We decided to watch the Princess Diaries. Alas, a beautiful friendship was born. We bonded over the scene where the principal answers the phone and says "Gupta... uh huh... uh huh... uh huh... uh huh... The queen is coming". (Very few people recall this scene but it's seriously hilarious). We laughed for a good ten minutes and the nickname Gupta was born for one another.

Something happened that night and we became instant best friends. That was almost exactly two years ago. Since then, we've stayed up late waaay too many nights talking about Jesus, boys, ministry, class and our families. During the school year, we'd wake up an hour early and sit down and have coffee together and just share life.

Another bonding experience: Josie, the worst but best cat in the entire world

When Dan and I get married in less than four months (woohoo!!!), he will be moving into my condo with me. So, Gupta is moving out tomorrow. It seriously is the thing that saddens me most about getting married. Gupts is moving into an apartment that is literally less than ten minutes away with one of her other best friends. It probably isn't that big of a deal and I'm probably being dramatic. But God has just blessed me so much through her. It's hard to imagine what this next chapter of our friendship will look like but I know she will turn out to be one of those rare life-long friends that doesn't come around too often. She is a such a wonderful woman of Christ and I've been so blessed to have lived with her for the past two years.

So blessed to have her there as I got engaged

And blessed to have her as a wonderful bridesmaid!

Disney World for Spring Break!

This might be one of my most favorite pictures of all time.
