St. Louis
Surprise, surprise but this post is overdue. We went to St. Louis back in the beginning of January. Really, I wrote this post a while ago, I'm just really bad about uploading pictures from my phone to my computer. And who wants a blog post without pictures!? Dan surprised me with a trip to St. Louis for Christmas! Woop woop! He's known I've always wanted to go there and it's on the list.
We left after work on Friday. It was a super easy drive. It took about five hours and they're an hour behind us, so we got there by 9:30pm. We ended up with an AWESOME hotel, the Hyatt Regency at the Arch. Seriously people, if you're traveling on short notice, hit up Priceline's express deals. They won't steer you wrong.
Pretty much as soon as we dumped our bags in our room, we headed out looking for a place to eat. One side note about Dan and mys philosophy on adventures... adventuring does not include cars. You have to walk or take buses or subways. You experience so much more of the city or the culture if you're not shut up in your own little vehicle. So we walked a few blocks to this trendy pizza place called Pi. Dan ordered snazzy homemade beer but I obviously just ordered a diet coke. We ate a pizza and watched the last half of the Mizzou football game. Somehow, by the end of the game we were cheering for them to win. We're just some of the locals, ya know?
In the morning we went to the arch which was something I was dying to do! We were thrilled and surprised to discover that there's a free (best word ever) Westward Expansion museum under the arch. You better believe we hit that up - Dan loves museums. Then we went up into the arch. It was crazy. You go up in these pod things that have no windows. You can feel yourself moving up but can't see anything then suddenly pop up at the top of the arch. The top was so neat! It felt like a space ship. There was snow on the ground and out of one window you could see someone wrote "Will you marry me?" really large in the snow. I WAS DYING. So cute. I'm a sucker for proposals.
After the arch, we walked three miles to a restaurant called Pappy's BBQ. Then waited in line for about an hour. We had heard so many good things about this place that we were determined to eat lunch there. Once we finally got our food, we were very impressed. It was delicious but, in my humble opinion, no better than Eli's BBQ. I lovelovelove Eli's.
After lunch we headed to the City Museum. This place is cool people. It's a museum for kids, or adults that like to act like children. Which, Dan and I certainly do. We ran in a giant hamster wheel, spun in teacup chairs, went indoor splunking (awesome) and went down a TEN STORY SLIDE. It was great.
We got a late dinner that night. We went to Washington Street, which is their trendy downtown area with all the yummy restaurants. We ate at a fancy Mexican place called Miagondo's or something. It was delicious. Afterwards we went to a super hipster coffee shop and ate sorbet. YUM.
Driving home on Sunday morning sucked. It snowed six inches overnight and they didn't send out the plow trucks... I guess I've always taken for granted that Cincinnati always sends out the plows...always. It took us 8 hours to get home. This is from I64 west - one of the biggest highways in the country. Looks safe, right?
St. Louis was great and everything I hoped for! More adventures soon to come!
